In 2014, I designed the user experience for a series of iOS and Android apps for the Taubman malls while working for the agency MxM. The goal was to help customers learn more about available stores, find them on the map and other landmarks, and navigate to them. A secondary goal was to cross-promote deals and mall events.

We used these videos to sell the vision to the client. The sketch-like presentation helped focus the conversation on functionality. We chose video to show how the app would feel in use — something static mockups alone couldn't properly convey.

Wayfinding and beacons

The app used beacons to orient users, enable turn-by-turn directions, and let them pin parking spots on the map. Users could also favorite stores for easy access, create multi-store itineraries, and filter by amenities or store category.

We launched the app across several Taubman-owned malls in the U.S. and internationally. It received positive press for pioneering the use of beacon technology and turn-by-turn navigation in retail environments.
